A Call for Participation in a Specialized Seminar ‘Human Rights in the Places of Unfreedom’

 

The Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union and the non-governmental organization M’ART are calling for participants to take part in a specialized seminar entitled ‘Human Rights in the Places of Unfreedom’. The seminar is held with the support of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee and the International Renaissance Foundation.

The seminar is an educational activity of the Understanding Human Rights All-Ukrainian Educational Program.

The participants will be selected from those who have basic training in human rights, are motivated to work actively for the support and protection of human rights, cooperate or are interested in cooperation with non-governmental organizations, and who work or would like to work in the interests of inmates of investigatory isolation wards, penal colonies, temporary isolation wards, reception centers, mental dispensaries, vocational schools, schools of social rehabilitation and rehabilitation centers for children, geriatric centers, orphanages, boarding schools, guardhouses, disciplinary battalions, centers for temporary detention of refugees and stateless persons and in other places of unfreedom.

Dates: 24 to 28 September 2011

Venue: Chernihiv, The Sunrise Tourist Base

The seminar participants will be able:

  • to obtain basic knowledge about international standards and specific character of the protection of rights of those who are detained in the places of unfreedom;
  • to obtain knowledge and skills necessary to organize activities for the support and protection of human rights;
  • to take up a position concerning particular up-to-date social processes (such us detainment in the places of unfreedom), which is based on human rights principles.

The applicants should be ready:

  • to work actively for the support and protection of human rights;
  • to attend all activities of the five-day seminar;
  • to cooperate with non-governmental organizations;
  • to work in the interests of people who are kept in the places of unfreedom;
  • to team up with other seminar participants.

The age of participants is not limited. Preference will be given to those applicants who have already participated in the activities of the Understanding Human Rights All-Ukrainian Educational Program.

The organizers provide participants with food and lodging and reimburse travel expenses (round trip tickets for regular buses or seats in a second-class sleeping carriage).

The group of participants will be formed according to the results of a competitive selection.
