Civil Activists Prepare an All-Ukrainian Campaign Entitled ‘The Yellow Card of Ukrainian Police: a Second Warning’

 

An All-Ukrainian Campaign ‘The Yellow Card of Ukrainian Police: a Second Warning’ is taking place in Kyiv and ten other cities of Ukraine on the 8th of September 2011. The campaign is initiated by the activists of the Human Rights Activists in Action social network and the graduates of the Understanding Human Rights Program. Its aim is to raise awareness among young people about the protection of their rights upon the contact with police officers and to attract attention of a community and the governing body of the Ministry of Interior to human rights issues. The campaign is a part of the All-Ukrainian Student Information and Educational Program for Control of Actions of the Ukrainian Ministry of Interior.

In many cities human rights defenders, representatives of well-known non-governmental organizations and youth activists will come to educational establishments to teach young people to protect their rights. There will be bright performances and skits about conflicts between young people and police officers. 10 thousand information brochures about the rights upon detention will be distributed among young people.
In conclusion of the campaign young activists and well-known human rights defenders will go the Ministry of Interior of Ukraine and will appeal to the governing body of the Ukrainian police with a demand to control the activities and actions of police officers in regions and to explain them the basic rules of detention provided by law.

The campaign is initiated by the activists of the network of graduates of the Understanding Human Rights All-Ukrainian Educational Program and is supported by the Norwegian Helsinki Committee. The campaign is held within the framework of the project of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union.

‘The Yellow Card of Ukrainian Police: a Second Warning’ Campaign is the second attempt of the activists to influence illegal actions of police officers in respect of youth. The first All-Ukrainian Campaign was held on the 1st of September 2010 on the International Day of Knowledge. About 18 thousand students from 16 big cities of Ukraine learned about the rights upon detention. The activists managed to launch a general public discussion about the prevention of illegal actions of police officers. Information and educational activities for students of higher educational establishments were held in Mykolaiv, Chernihiv and Kharkiv in September to December 2010. Local initiatives were actively supported by the educational establishments’ administration.
