A Social Network as an Innovative Instrument for Human Rights Protection

The seminar on the use of media and HRact to organize actions in support of human rights was held from 27 to 29 June 2011 in Pischane of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. 

The seminar was organized by the Postup Human Rights Center and the Understanding Human Rights All-Ukrainian Educational Program with the financial assistance of the International Renaissance Foundation.

Fourteen young activists from all over Ukraine gathered together for the sake of one goal, which is to learn using new media in advocacy.

The seminar agenda included the following issues: cooperation between NGOs and Mass Media, using social networks for public campaigns and the role of media in the work of non-governmental organizations. After the seminar one of the participants mentioned, “At the end of the two-day seminar I’ve realized that social networks are used not only to have avatars or to “like” something, but for advocacy and social activities as well”.

Although the seminar is over, the participants intend to continue fruitful cooperation and communication. They have gained new knowledge and looked at human rights from a different perspective.
