Exhibition of Torture Instruments near the General Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine
On 23 June 2011 human rights defenders held an action near the General Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine on the occasion of the International Day against Tortures.
During the action the organizers acquainted the representatives of the General Prosecutor’s Office with modern torture instruments used by Ukrainian police officers.
The displays that were showed at the action are unique, because they are made of things common for the everyday life. The experts who helped preparing the exhibits were ex police officers and lawyers.
Similar actions were held in Kharkiv, Simferopil’, Chernihiv, Donets’k, Luhans’k and other cities of Ukraine.
In 2010 cases of tortures in Ukraine increased from 600 thousand to 780 thousand per year (this means that every second there is an act of violence in Ukraine).
Death toll in the law enforcement agencies increased from 23 to 51.
