It was learned on 17 March 2012 that Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau Kavalyou, the two men sentenced to death in connection with the Minsk subway explosion in April 2011, had been executed. The Belarusian authorities thus ignored the requests of representatives of the European Union and international human rights groups, and demonstrated their rejection of universally accepted principles of humanism and disregard for international law.

Today Ales Bialiatski, Chairman of the Belarusian human rights organisation Viasna, one of the founders of the Belarusian Human Rights House in exile, was sentenced to 4,5 years of intensive regime with property confiscation by the Belarusian court on charges of tax evasion (see more on his arrest http://humanrightshouse.org/Articles/16806.html).

Ukrainian civil activists and human rights defenders are holding an action of solidarity with a detained Belarus human rights defender Ales Bialiatski in Kyiv on September 5th, at 2 p.m. The activists’ demand the Belarus authorities to release Ales and cease criminal proceedings against him. It has been one month since Ales Bialiatski, a prominent human rights defender, the Head of the Viasna Human Rights Center and the Vice President of the International Federation for Human Rights, was detained in Minsk. He was obviously detained by Belarus authorities due to political reasons within the framework of a criminal investigation on charges of nonpayment of taxes. The human rights defender is threatened by the 7 year term imprisonment.
